Freemans Bay workers cottage
The insertion of a modern contemporary home into the bones of an Auckland heritage cottage. Starting on a 430m2 site with a 120m2 of living, this home was expanded into a 340m2 five-bedroom family home with a pool and lush tropical gardens. Attention to detail and smooth hues of contemporary elegance completed this project and made it an icon in the Auckland villa reimagination space.
The brief was to maximise a small existing building and site to create a stunning family home. By selecting a site that sloped to the north the height could be utilised to the maximum whilst drawing on the advantage of the light exposure.
Layered over 3 levels, the lower floor was excavated almost to the front boundary which created the majority of the 430m2 site plate as a large level indoor-outdoor blend of contemporary architecture and tropical sunny living paradise.
The redesign was completed in 2018.
The upper two levels house a selection of bedrooms and bathrooms with a suspended garage. The master suite is one of 6-star hotel quality leaving the occupants feeling truly indulged.
Timeless contemporary architecture and enduring materials were chosen to ensure longevity and low maintenance costs.
